Looking for the best hidden gem parks for kids in the Twin Cities and northwest suburbs?
If you live anywhere from Monticello to Maple Grove to St. Michael and the northwest metro, you already know Minnesota has no shortage of parks. But some of the best spots are the ones people don’t always talk about — the parks with unique playgrounds, quieter trails, beach areas, climbing features, and enough space for kids to actually burn energy.
As a REALTOR® working throughout Monticello, St. Michael, Rogers, Maple Grove, Plymouth, Zimmerman, and the surrounding northwest suburbs, this is one of the questions I get all the time from buyers moving to the area:
“Where do families actually go outside around here?”
So I put together a list of some of my favorite hidden gem parks around the Twin Cities and northwest suburbs that are worth checking out this year.
Elm Creek Park Reserve in Maple Grove
Elm Creek Park Reserve
If you’ve lived in the northwest suburbs for a while, you probably already know about Elm Creek — but if you’re relocating from another area, this park is a must-see.
Elm Creek is easily one of the best outdoor spaces in the northwest metro because it has a little bit of everything:
- huge playground areas
- paved walking and biking trails
- swimming pond
- picnic areas
- winter tubing hill
- nature center
- wooded trails
- open green space
It’s especially great for families because you can spend an entire afternoon here without running out of things to do.
For buyers moving to Maple Grove, Dayton, Rogers, or Champlin, proximity to Elm Creek is often a huge lifestyle bonus.
French Regional Park in Plymouth
French Regional Park
French Regional Park is one of the more underrated parks in the west metro.
Located along Medicine Lake in Plymouth, it has:
- a large modern playground
- beach access
- paved trails
- shaded picnic spots
- canoe/kayak rentals during the season
- beautiful lake views
One thing I always tell people about Plymouth is that it balances suburban convenience with really strong outdoor recreation access, and French Regional Park is a perfect example of that.
If you’re searching for homes in Plymouth or Maple Grove and want nearby parks and trails, this area is worth exploring.
Prairie Park in Otsego
Prairie Park
Prairie Park is one of those parks that locals know about, but people outside the immediate area often overlook.
The playground is newer, there’s plenty of open space, and it’s usually less crowded than some of the larger metro parks.
For families moving toward Otsego, Rogers, or St. Michael because they want newer homes and more space, parks like this are part of why the area continues growing.
Crow-Hassan Park Reserve Near Rogers and Hanover
Crow-Hassan Park Reserve
If your family likes more natural outdoor spaces, Crow-Hassan is one of the best hidden gems in the northwest suburbs.
This park feels very different from traditional city playground parks because it’s known more for:
- prairie landscapes
- hiking trails
- wildlife areas
- horseback riding trails
- wide-open scenery
It’s a great place if you want kids off screens for a while and outside exploring.
I especially recommend this park to buyers looking at acreage properties or homes around Hanover, Rogers, Corcoran, or western Hennepin County.
Bertram Chain of Lakes Near Monticello
Bertram Chain of Lakes Regional Park
This is one of the most underrated outdoor areas near Monticello.
Bertram has:
- trails
- beach access
- camping
- mountain biking
- kayak opportunities
- wooded scenery
- year-round recreation
A lot of people moving farther northwest toward Monticello, Big Lake, or Clearwater are specifically looking for easier access to outdoor recreation, and this park is one of the reasons people love the area.
Mississippi Gateway Regional Park
Mississippi Gateway Regional Park
This park flies under the radar compared to some of the bigger-name Twin Cities parks.
It includes:
- playground areas
- riverfront access
- trails
- picnic spaces
- open recreation areas
Plus, the regional trail connections make it a great option if your family likes biking or longer walks.
Why Local Parks Matter When Buying a Home
One thing I’ve noticed working with buyers throughout the northwest suburbs is that people are paying more attention to lifestyle than ever before.
They’re not just looking at the house itself.
They’re also asking:
- What’s nearby?
- Are there trails?
- Are there outdoor spaces?
- What’s there to do on weekends?
- Can we easily get outside?
That’s a big reason communities like Maple Grove, Plymouth, St. Michael, Rogers, Otsego, Monticello, and Zimmerman continue to attract buyers from all over the Twin Cities metro.
Final Thoughts on the Best Hidden Gem Parks in the Twin Cities
The best parks aren’t always the biggest or busiest ones.
Sometimes the best spots are the quieter local parks, regional trail systems, or outdoor spaces that make everyday life better once you actually live in the area.
If you’re exploring the northwest suburbs or thinking about moving somewhere between Plymouth and St. Cloud, I always recommend spending a day visiting local parks, trails, and community spaces before choosing where to live.
You learn a lot about an area that way.
