Becker Township Acreage Guide: Land, Lakes, and Small-Town Living

Becker Township comes up a lot in conversations with buyers who want genuine rural space without leaving the Monticello area entirely. It's one of the larger townships I work in, and it has a character all its own — worth understanding before you start touring.

The Basics

Becker Township sits in Sherburne County and has been an established community since it was organized in 1871, named after state legislator George Loomis Becker. It's a big township — roughly 56 square miles — bordered on the southwest by the Mississippi River, giving parts of it genuine river access and river-adjacent land.

Worth noting: Becker Township and the City of Becker are two different things. The township surrounds and sits alongside the city, and the rural, acreage-driven properties I typically show buyers are in the township itself, not the incorporated city.

What Living Here Looks Like

Becker Township has a solidly rural character with real economic stability — the median household income here runs notably above the county average, and it's home to a genuinely established, longer-term population rather than a fast-turnover market. For buyers, that tends to mean well-maintained properties and neighbors who've been there a while, which I think says something good about the area.

The township is also home to the Sherburne County Generating Station — the largest power plant in Minnesota — which has been a significant local employer for the surrounding area for decades. If you're relocating for work in the energy sector or looking at the broader Monticello-Becker-Big Lake job corridor, that's worth knowing.

Why Buyers Choose Becker Township

The properties I show most often here are acreage buyers wanting room for animals, a garden, or genuine privacy, families who want more land than an in-town lot without sacrificing a reasonable commute, and buyers drawn specifically to the river-adjacent parcels along the Mississippi.

As with any rural property, zoning and land use rules are set at the township level, so confirming what a specific parcel allows — livestock, outbuildings, potential future splits — is a step I build into every offer here.

Should You Look at Becker Township?

If you want real acreage, a stable, established community, and proximity to both Monticello and the broader river corridor, Becker Township is worth serious consideration. It's one of the areas where I've helped buyers land exactly the kind of rural property they'd been searching for elsewhere without luck.
